Warbaby Fox and JL Cecil Smith, two new high-capacity aluminium catamaran ferries built for the Government of Bermuda, have recently been named Best Large Fast Ferry in Baird Maritime’s 2025 awards. Each 40-metre vessel carries 2 x VEEM Star-C propellers with 1.00mm Interceptor Strips, supporting commuter and tourist services across Bermuda’s Great Sound.
Designed by Sydney-based One2Three Naval Architects and built by Strategic Marine in Singapore, the catamarans carry up to 550 passengers across three decks. Their Z-bow hull design and rafted superstructure deliver approximately 25 per cent lower fuel consumption per passenger mile compared to the older fleet they replace, without reducing operating speed on conventional diesel propulsion. The pair were delivered in late 2025 and have since marked a significant milestone – His Majesty King Charles III stepped aboard JL Cecil Smith during his first official visit to Bermuda as monarch.
VEEM is proud to play a role in a project that demonstrates how thoughtful naval architecture, precision shipbuilding and efficient propulsion can come together to deliver meaningful gains in performance and emissions for operators worldwide.
